On Saturday September 22, Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Nu, and
the Associated Student Government (ASG) will be hosting the 7th Annual 5K for
children’s literacy. The race begins at 8 am at the Pi Phi Centennial Gate,
located on Maple Street.
Last year the event raised over 24,000 dollars that
was donated directly towards books and funds for elementary schools and to
promote children’s literacy.
“The money raised is sent to the Pi Beta Phi foundation,”
Maggie Thompson, the Vice President of Philanthropy said, “This is the
foundation that funds all of our local philanthropic efforts and other national
literacy initiatives throughout the nation.”
Last year over 900 people registered to participate
in the race. People can also form teams of five people to run the race
together. There is also the “sleep in” option where people can donate money
when they register for the race and then sleep in on race day.
There is also a Greek Challenge this year between
the Greek houses. The fraternity or sorority with the fifteen members to cross
the finish line first wins a function with Pi Phi.
“This Greek Challenge is intended to increase
participation in the event throughout the Greek community,” Thompson said.
On September 20th, the Thursday before
the 5k, Chick-fli-A on MLK is hosting spirit night to raise money for the 5K. A
percentage of the proceeds from the purchases made from 5-8 pm will be donated
to the fundraising for the 5K.
Several other local companies are sponsoring the 5K
such as Rush Running, Mertin’s Eye Care, Collier Drug Store and My Brother’s
Salsa.
After the race, winners of each division will win
gift cards or prizes donated by Blakeman’s Jewelry, Club Haus Fitness and
Powerhouse Fitness.
